Smith fired as athletic director; Cantler named interim

Chip Smith, Western Carolina’s athletic director since September 2004, has been fired and replaced on an interim basis by Fred Cantler. Smith’s contract was scheduled to expire May 25. Cantler, who retired in March after 33 years in athletics administration at WCU, will serve as interim athletic director while the university conducts a national search… »

Suspect in Food Lion attempted robbery apparently also snatched purse at Walmart

According to Detective Jennie Rumsey of the Sylva Police Department, the suspect in an Oct. 6 robbery attempt at Food Lion is apparently the same man who stole a purse from a customer’s cart in Walmart that same day. Sylva hires interim town manager

Sheriff’s Office makes meth lab bust, arrests nine

On Wednesday, Oct. 19, deputies from the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office received a search warrant for the Danny William Ratliff residence at 333 Lazy Lane in the Barkers Creek area.
