1951 Centennial Edition

Today the Herald is pleased to unveil a digital replica of its 1951 Centennial Edition.

The quest to offer it online began when Herald photographer Nick Breedlove was searching for old photos that could be replicated in the upcoming book “Then and Now: Jackson County” that’s slated for release this summer by Arcadia Publishing and authored by Breedlove and Herald Editor Lynn Hotaling.

Breedlove first checked the Sesquicentennial edition, which The Herald published in 2001 to commemorate Jackson County’s 150th year. That special section included information from the Centennial issue, and Breedlove asked Herald publisher Steve Gray about the 1951 publication. Gray had a copy, well preserved but fragile, and agreed to allow Small Town Papers in Seattle, Washington, a company that specializes in producing digital archives for newspapers, to scan the issue in its entirety.

The 42-page Centennial section, published Aug. 30, 1951, is likely to be of interest to many Herald subscribers and online readers.
