Commissioners OK radio, Jackson Paper loans
In a special meeting this afternoon (Dec. 12), commissioners voted 4-0 to approve a $110,000 loan to 540 Broadcasting Company.
That loan when combined with a Dec. 5 loan of $179,000 will enable Roy Burnette, who started 540 Broadcasting Company, to restart radio service for Jackson County.
Commissioners’ Chairman Jack Debnam was on vacation and absent from that meeting.
Later in the meeting, they voted 3-1, with Commissioner Joe Cowan voting “no” to approve up to $250,000 in funds for Jackson Paper.
Both loans are funded by the County’s revolving loan fund. 540 Broadcasting will use their funds to jumpstart a local radio station and Jackson Paper will make repairs to their boiler.
Cowan had concerns about Jackson Paper’s finances and covenants of a loan with another bank, and took issue with those prior to the vote.
