Sheriff’s Office seizes marijuana plants

Local law enforcement officers Thursday (April 2) seized more than 100 marijuana plants and arrested three at a house in Cullowhee’s Wayehutta community.

The seized marijuana has an approximate street value of $290,000, according to Capt. Steve Lillard of the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies searched the home located at 1860 Wayehutta Road around 11 a.m. and discovered an indoor marijuana manufacturing operation and took possession of 116 marijuana plants.

Those arrested are Daniel James Riddell, 39, who is charged with possession of drug paraphernalia, maintaining a dwelling for the use of controlled substances, manufacturing marijuana, felony possession of marijuana, and possession with intent to sell/deliver marijuana; Daniel James Riddell II, 20, same charges; and Susan Elizabeth Riddell, 38, who faces charges of possession with intent to sell/deliver marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.

As of Friday afternoon (April 3), Daniel Riddell and Daniel Riddell II are in jail under a $7,000 bond each; Susan Riddell has been released after posting a $4,000 bond.

The Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Western Carolina University Police Department.
