11-12 softball, 9-10 baseball All-Stars win district titles
Softball – Jackson County’s 11-12 softball All-Stars captured the District 5 crown last night at Mark Watson Park by defeating Franklin 7-4. The team is undefeated in tournament play.
The team now moves into competition for the state crown, with that tournament set to get under way Saturday in Pilot Mountain. The local girls’ undefeated record earned the team a first-round bye, so Jackson County will not play until Sunday, July 18, at 4 p.m. when they will face the winner of Saturday’s District 2-District 7 matchup.
The winner of the July 17-23 state tourney will move onto super regional competition starting July 28 in Warner Robbins, Ga., according to Coach Dave McCoy.
McCoy said he believes this is the first 11-12 softball team from Jackson County to qualify for the state tournament.
McCoy expressed appreciation to Jackson County grounds personnel who were on hand to keep the field in shape despite Tuesday evening showers.
“They did a super job,” he said.
The District 5 tournament at Mark Watson was played in memory of Barbara Carnes, McCoy said.
Baseball – Jackson County’s 9-10 baseball All-Stars won their District 5 crown last night with a 9-2 win over West Asheville in Franklin. They are coached by Macky Hooper and are also undefeated in all-star play.
