Courthouse dome removal [photos and video]

By Nick Breedlove

Crews work to remove the Courthouse dome July 1 in order to repair the structure. According to library architect Donnie Love of McMillan Pazdan Smith, woodwork inside the dome that was put in when the cupola was removed and refurbished in November 1994 is now rotting. In addition, architects plan to bring in a specialist to repair the tin that surrounds the dome, because Love said they are trying to maintain the building’s original characteristics from a historic-preservation standpoint. While the cupola is off, contractors will be able to simultaneously complete roof work. The cost of the work is estimated to be about $68,000, which wasn’t included in initial estimates; however County Manager Ken Westmoreland said savings realized in other parts of the project can be used to make up the difference. Crews were prepared and in place to remove the dome June 17, however it was determined the dome weighed more than they originally estimated.  – Herald photos and video by Nick Breedlove
