Sylva Town Board member Sarah Graham announces resignation

By Nick Breedlove

Sylva Town Board member Sarah Graham announced May 20 during the regular meeting that she was tendering her resignation, effective June 30.

Graham was elected to the town board in 2007, while working as the executive director of the Downtown Sylva Association.

She read the following statement to the board:

“My family and I are moving to a new home just outside the city limits. Because the house isn’t in town I have no choice but to resign my position on this board. It’s my intent to serve through the current fiscal year and see the 2010-11 budget process to completion. I’ve enjoyed my work on the town board very much and  I’m grateful to the voters who entrusted me with this position. I look forward to continuing to work to help the town of Sylva in anyway I can . I’m grateful also to the town’s hard working staff and my fellow board members for their efforts on behalf of the town and to Mayor (Maurice) Moody and former Mayor (Brenda) Oliver for their leadership and guidance.”

After her statement, Mayor  Moody said “We certainly hate to see Sarah leave, she’s done a good job on the board. She unfortunately made this decision … and will be a county resident rather than a city resident.”

Graham is credited with being the driving force behind several town projects including the now finished Bridge Park.
