‘Empty Bowl’ fundraiser tonight

Community table director Amy Grimes looks on as Riverwood Pottery’s Brant Barnes shapes a bowl that may end up at the Table’s “Empty Bowl” fund-raiser slated for today, Friday, April 23, from 4-7 p.m. Tickets are $20 and include the purchaser’s choice of a handcrafted bowl, donated by local potters, soup from local restaurants, bread, dessert and a drink. Both dine-in (indoor and out) and carry-out options will be available, and the event will include live music. Barnes said it’s quite a process to create a bowl, first “throwing” the pot, above, then letting it dry, firing it to 1,850 degrees, and finally adding the glaze before firing it again at 2,400 degrees to melt the opaque glass glaze. Last year’s Empty Bowl event raised almost $10,000 to support the Table’s efforts to reduce hunger in the community.
