Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians declares state of emergency

By Nick Breedlove

The Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians Principal Chief Michelle Hicks signed a proclamation declaring a state of emergency on Saturday (Jan. 30). The proclamation applies to all of the Cherokee Indian Reservation, including Qualla Boundary, Snowbird and Cherokee County tracts.

The proclamation restricts travel “after sun down unless it is an emergency or if residents are traveling to shelters. Public safety officers (police, fire, emergency medical services, emergency management, animal control and natural resources) are ordered to direct motorists to return to their home or local dwelling points (motels and hotels).”

The restrictions are in place until 4:30 p.m. on Sunday (Jan. 31)
