Hoey Fire

A fire that broke out in Western Carolina University’s Hoey Auditorium this morning was quickly extinguished by local firefighters.

According to WCU spokesman Bill Studenc, the call came in to university police at 10:38 a.m. to report a fire alarm activation in Hoey. A second call followed soon after to confirm there was smoke and fire, he said. Curtains in Hoey’s main auditorium caught fire but were quickly extinguished, he said, adding that the cause of the blaze is still under investigation.

The Cullowhee Fire Department received assistance on the scene from the Sylva and Savannah fire departments. Also on the scene, in addition to the WCU police, were Jackson County Emergency Management, WestCare EMS and the Jackson County Fire Marshal.
