Oliver not running for re-election
By the end of the year, the town of Sylva will have a new mayor.
Long-time Mayor Brenda Oliver announced last night (Thursday) that she will not seek re-election in November.
“I have had the honor of serving the people of Sylva for the last 28 years and 17 of those years were as your mayor,” Oliver said. “I have been privileged to work with good, well-intentioned people locally and regionally as well as wonderfully talented people on the state and national level. Our staff is second to none. I have been a small part of some pretty amazing changes in our town. I think Sylva is in a good place with unlimited potential. I know the best years are yet to be.”
Though she will not serve the town as an elected official, Oliver said that she will remain active in the community and the region.
“I want to say a heartfelt thank you to all of the people of Sylva,” Oliver said. “The experience has been awesome.”
Filing for municipal offices will open Monday and continue through noon Friday, July 17.
