County salaries see increase in this year’s budget

By Nick Breedlove

Though officials included no cost of living adjustments in this year’s budget, a number of county employees are seeing raises from last year, thanks to the implementation of the second phase of a salary study.

Commissioners last year contracted the Mercer Group of Atlanta to study how county employee salaries compared to those throughout the region. Representatives from Mercer studied salaries for the cities of Asheville, Sylva, Brevard and Franklin, along with Swain, Macon, Buncombe and Transylvania counties. The company also looked at how county salaries compared to similar positions in the private sector.
Mercer ultimately determined that salaries for Jackson County employees were lower than surrounding areas and suggested increasing them as a means of retaining employees and being more competitive when hiring for vacant positions.

According to Commissioners’ Chairman Brian McMahan, the county began implementing the Mercer Group’s suggestions during last year’s budget.

“What we did with the Mercer Study was divide it up to do it over two years,” McMahan said. “We couldn’t afford to do all of them in one year. Some were shifted to the second year. With the second part put in place this year, it makes that whole process complete.”
